DeKalb Cake
My family farms and some of the seed they get is from a company called DeKalb. At the end of the planting season, my dad wanted to serve some lunch to the guys who had helped us out all Spring by getting the seed for us and helping to load it. I had recently been talking about wanting to make a cake and cover and decorate it in fondant, so my dad said I could make a cake for the guys to have for dessert. I decided to make just a simple chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and cover it with white store-bought (I had tried making homemade marshmallow fondant.....not good) fondant, then cut the logo out of fondant and color it. Fondant is surprising very easy to work with. To color it, you can either knead in the color (paste and liquid coloring both work) or use a clean brush to brush on the color, which made my colors more vibrant. Cutting out the letters was a little tricky, but it was definitely worth it because I am pleased with how it turned out.
